Kees Hovingh

Kees Hovingh, MD, PhD, MBA, is an internist and vascular medicine specialist who joined Diabeter in 2026 in a part-time capacity. He is a full professor at the Department of Vascular Medicine at the Amsterdam University Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam. 

Hovingh completed his PhD in 2005 under the supervision of Professor John Kastelein, focusing on inherited disorders in lipid metabolism, and subsequently pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at Harvard University. He obtained his MBA at the Amsterdam Business School in 2015.

His research centres on the genetic determinants of cardiovascular disease and novel therapies for metabolic conditions, including diabetes and obesity. He has received personal research grants from ZonMw (Veni and Vidi) and has co-authored over 300 publications. From 2019 to 2025, he served as Chief Scientific Advisor at Novo Nordisk in Copenhagen, where he focused on the development of novel therapies in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.

At Diabeter, Kees contributes his expertise in cardiometabolic risk and vascular medicine to the care of people with type 1 diabetes — a group in whom cardiovascular complications remain a major concern.
