Pleun de Groen

Pleun de Groen is a PhD candidate at Amsterdam UMC / University of Amsterdam, who lives with type 1 diabetes herself, and a member of the research group led by Prof. Max Nieuwdorp. Her research examines the role of the gut microbiome in immune and metabolic regulation in type 1 diabetes, with a particular interest in how microbial-derived signals shape disease development. She is also involved in the MARVEL cohort study, a large prospective cohort study within all Diabeter Clinics to evaluate role of residual beta-cell fucntion, gut microbiota and development of complications in T1D.

Using a combination of experimental and translational approaches, her work aims to unravel host–microbe interactions that are relevant to autoimmune diabetes. Through her research, Pleun contributes to a growing body of knowledge that seeks to inform future strategies for prevention and treatment.

Her work is embedded within broader diabetes research efforts that also connect to clinical studies and innovation in the context of the Diabeter Centre Amsterdam.
