Max Nieuwdorp
Prof. Dr. Max Nieuwdorp is an internist–endocrinologist with internationally recognized expertise in diabetes, cardiometabolic disease, and the role of the gut microbiome in metabolic health. He is Professor of Medicine at the University of Amsterdam and has held senior leadership roles at Amsterdam UMC, including Head of Department.
His research focuses on the interaction between the gut microbiome, host metabolism, and cardiometabolic disease, with particular interest in translational and clinical studies that inform novel therapeutic strategies. Prof. Nieuwdorp has contributed extensively to the understanding of microbiome-driven mechanisms in diabetes and related metabolic disorders and has published widely in leading international journals.
Since March 2025, Prof. Nieuwdorp has been a member of the Board of Directors of Diabeter. In this role, he contributes to the strategic integration of high-quality clinical care and scientific research, strengthening Diabeter’s position as a leading center for innovative, value-based care for people with type 1 diabetes. Alongside his board responsibilities, he remains actively involved in clinical practice and research at Diabeter and at Diabeter Centrum Amsterdam in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC.
At Diabeter, Prof. Nieuwdorp supports the development of future-oriented care models and research programs that translate scientific insights into measurable improvements in outcomes and quality of life for people with type 1 diabetes.
