Giesje Nefs
Giesje Nefs, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and senior researcher at Diabeter Netherlands, where she specialises in the psychosocial aspects of type 1 diabetes and supports people of all ages in managing the emotional and behavioural challenges associated with lifelong diabetes care. She joined Diabeter in 2015 and combines clinical practice with research that advances understanding of psychological well-being in people with diabetes.
She earned her PhD in medical psychology from Tilburg University with a focus on emotional distress and diabetes, emphasising the need for individualized psychological support. Her research covers topics such as psychological barriers to adopting diabetes technologies, patient-reported outcomes related to automated insulin delivery systems, and the emotional burden of diabetes self-management in children, adolescents and adults.
At Diabeter, Giesje integrates evidence-based psychological insights into clinical care, helping to ensure that emotional health and behavioural factors are addressed alongside medical and technological advancements in diabetes treatment. Her work contributes to improving quality of life and self-management for people living with type 1 diabetes.
