Erik Serné

Dr. Erik Serné is an internist-vascular medicine specialist and diabetologist with extensive experience in clinical care, research, and education. Since 2006 he has held clinical and academic appointments at Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, and he currently serves as Medical Director of the Diabeter Centre Amsterdam (DCA), where he leads the integration of cutting-edge diabetes care with research and training.

His research focuses on vascular and metabolic aspects of diabetes, including the microvascular and cardiometabolic determinants of disease and complications. Dr. Serné has contributed to a broad body of scientific literature, ranging from fundamental studies on vascular function and insulin resistance to clinical research on diabetes technology. He is co-author of a recent systematic review and meta-analysis on automated insulin delivery systems in people with type 1 diabetes and first author of a Dutch cost-utility analysis comparing advanced insulin delivery versus standard care in type 1 diabetes, reflecting his active engagement in research relevant to type 1 diabetes care and outcomes.

Dr. Serné also supervises clinical research and teaches medical students and trainees. He is involved in national and international scientific collaborations and serves in leadership roles in professional societies, contributing to the advancement of diabetes research and multidisciplinary care.
